Length retention is an aspiration sought after by women of different cultures all over the world.
Although hair growth seems complicated, it’s simple. Hair growth is inevitable, therefore maintaining length is due to many contributing factors. Length retention is capable when these guiding principles are followed consistently.
Low manipulation (leaving your hair alone), is first and foremost an important contributor to healthy lengthened hair. Literally keeping your hands out off of your hair too frequently reduces hair fall and breakage.
Maintaining hydration and moisture is key. Knowing your hair’s moisture cycle helps with this principle. This requires monitoring how frequently your hair and scalp becomes dry after every application of hydration and moisture products.
Combing and detangling non moisturized hair is a sure way to cause breakage and excessive hair fall, hence preventing length retention.
Occasional hair conditioning treatments whether, it hot oil treatments (scalp) deep conditioners (hair), or a combination of both all work together to improve hydration, moisture, elasticity, and prevent damage.
Deep conditioners vary based on the need for moisture and or protein balance, therefore seeking advice from a professional is best.
Proper tools (combs, brushes, picks, etc.), are an important part of the process. Knowing when if ever, you should use combs with small teeth, detangling brushes, boar bristle brushes, vent brushes, etc., but never use tools that snag and pull the hair.
Relaxed and color treated hair is more delicate when wet than chemical free hair, due to the chemical alterations of the bonds.
Don’t overlap during chemical retouches, protein and moisture balance is imperative along with the other tips mentioned earlier.
Pamper your ends… let’s clear up the myth that trimming your ends help your hair grow. This is not true; trimming your ends is extremely important to the length retention process because, split ends are inevitable and cannot stopped. We can prevent damage caused by them. Following the tips mentioned above will limit the frequency of your trimmings.
Establish a schedule with a professional for consistency this prevents the amount you trim from exceeding your new growth, resulting in length retention.
Lastly, PROTECT your hair! Repeat with me PROTECT your hair (smile)!
Give your hair a break by occasionally wearing protective styles. This creates opportunity for low manipulation, less exposure to your ends, and allowing hydration and moisture to sustain.
Hair is said to be “our crown and glory” therefore, we must treat it as so. Crowns are valuable and always protected. Commitment is Key!
